The Clothing Care Guide: Make Everything You Own Last Longer

The fastest way to upgrade a wardrobe is to stop destroying the one you have. Most clothing damage happens in the laundry, not in wear.

Wash less, wash cold

Denim wants washing every 10+ wears, knitwear every 3–4, tailoring almost never (steam and air instead). Cold water protects fibres and colour; most modern detergents are formulated for it anyway.

The dryer is the enemy

Heat shrinks cotton, melts elastane and sets stains permanently. Air-dry everything you care about: knits flat on a towel, shirts on hangers, denim hung by the waistband.

Knitwear rules

Fold, never hang — hanging stretches shoulders out of shape. De-pill with a fabric comb, not scissors. Store seasonal knits clean, because moths hunt for wear residue, not wool itself.

Repair culture

A loose button takes four minutes; a tailor's hem costs less than lunch. Clothes that fit well and sit right get worn — which is the whole point. When something's genuinely done, Best Sellers and Men have the replacement.
